The main character of the story. Begins as a cadet at Balamb Garden, training to become part of SeeD, an elite mercenary force. He keeps to himself and rarely ever shows emotion. He has ambition to become great at what he does but in terms of working with others and as a team he is very inept.

Rinoa Heartilly |
The leader of the Forest Owls resistence movement in Timber fighting for independence from Galbadia. Rinoa is honest and straightforward with those she speaks to, as well as compassionate. Her initial contact with SeeD and decision to work with them starts with Seifer.

Selphie Tilmitt |
Selphie transferred to Balamb Garden from Trabia Garden. She has little issue getting acquainted and accepted into her new surroundings due to her light-hearted and happy-go-lucky attitude. Although she comes off naive she is not, and is respected by her peers.

Irvine Kinneas |
Irvine is a student at the Galbadia Garden. He is known throughout SeeD for being the best marksman. As much as he enjoys his sniper work he enjoys being a ladies man equally, although the latter is nowhere near as successful as the former. Irvine accompanies Squall and the party when his skills as a sharpshooter are required.

Zell Dincht |
Zell grew up as a spoiled rich boy, and joined the Balamb Garden Academy when he was 13 years old to follow in his grandfather's footsteps. He egins as a cadet alongside Squall at Balamb Garden. While he is implusive and quick tempered, he is also honest and has a good sense of humor. Zell is also a master at martial arts and a powerful warrior.

Quistis Trepe |
Quistis joined SeeD when she was 15 years old and her great fighting abilities quickly earned her a spot as an instructor in Balamb Garden. She is well respected throughout the Garden and even has her own fanclub called "Trepies". She begins as Squall's instructor at Balamb Garden. Precocious and cool on the exterior, she sometimes lets her feelings get the better of her.

Edea Kramer |
She is an enigmatic character in the beginning. All that's known about her is that she is a sorceress with a strong grasp over the Galbadian Military, working towards gaining more influence and power. Being marked as a real threat to peace and stability SeeD has been dispatched to eliminate her. It's not known until later that she is actually Cid's wife.

Seifer Almasy |
Squall's arch-rival at Balamb Garden. Although he is a gifted fighter, his arrogance and insubordination have prevented him from attaining the rank of SeeD. He was the former head of Balamb Garden's Disciplinary Committee, but his "disciplining" was more bullying.

Laguna Loire |
Laguna was once a Galbadian Soldier, who became a respected journalist. He is open and friendly with a heart of gold. He's always willing to assist those in need and against those who rule by oppression.

One of Laguna's friends, he fights alongside him in the Galbadian Army. Extremely fast with a wit to match, he still manages to display a caring personality.

Ward had a scar across his head as an injury from battle. He is another friend of Laguna's and fought alongside him in the Galbadian Army. He is big and strong, and rarely speaks.
