The implementation of weapons into FF8 wasn't the same as most other final fantasies due to having to collect a certain amount of materials AND finding magazines in order to upgrade/change weapons. Limit breaks were also 100% dependent on weapons that characters were using (ie there's a 0% chance to ever get Lion Heart with Squall using the generic Gunblade).
